Maine PFML: contributions are flowing and benefit applications open in 2026

Posted 2/2/2026

Effective 2/2/2026

Maine employers began remitting Paid Family and Medical Leave contributions in 2025. In 2026 the program shifts to paying benefits, which means real leave administration for HR.

What changed Maine's PFML program follows a two-stage rollout: payroll contributions first, benefits second. With the benefit phase live, employees can apply for up to 12 weeks of paid family or medical leave in a benefit year, including leave for military deployment transitions and safe leave following abuse or violence. Who it applies to Nearly all Maine employers. Contribution rates depend on employer size, and employers with fewer than 15 employees pay a reduced rate. Employers may deduct part of the premium from employee wages. What HR needs to do - Verify quarterly wage reporting and remittance are accurate — errors compound quickly. - Update handbooks: Maine PFML is separate from Maine earned paid leave, and both can be in play. - Build an intake workflow for state verification requests; slow employer responses delay employee pay and generate escalations. - If you are considering a private plan substitution, review the substitution rules and deadlines before your next plan year.
